What Are Spider Veins?
Millions of men and women are bothered by unsightly spider veins. Spider veins are small, thin blood vessels that lie close to the surface of the skin. Although these super-fine veins are connected with the larger venous system, they are not an essential part of it.
Women most frequently request laser spider vein removal from their legs, and men usually request to have them removed from their nose.
Certain factors contribute to the development of spider veins including, heredity, pregnancy, hormonal factors, weight gain, occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing, and trauma.
Spider veins usually take on one of three forms:
- They may appear in a spider shape with multiple vessels radiating outward from a central point.
- They may appear in a pattern that resembles branches of a tree.
- They may be in a linear pattern that appears as thin separate, independent parallel lines.
How Do You Remove Spider Veins?
The best treatment for spider veins is laser. It is the gold standard. The laser uses a focused beam of light; the wavelength of which is targeted to the pigment in the blood (Almoglobin). The destruction of blood cells generates heat that damages the internal lining of the vein. Over the next few weeks the vessel will disappear, and the damaged cells will be removed by the body's scavenging system.
What Should I Expect After the Treatment?Immediately after the treatment you will see any of these three possible outcomes:
1. The vessel will disappear
2. The vessel will darken
3. The vessel will shrink
The surrounding skin may turn pink and be slightly swollen for up to 24 hours. Many leg veins need multiple treatments, before the full effect takes place.
